5. SUPPORTIVE COUNSELLING FOR VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

The program model is to organize support groups for the victims of abuse to provide social and moral support and link them with the other service providers. The program models recognize creating awareness on the issue and preventing further escalation or entering into an abusive relationship.

The support group component emphasizes holding group sessions in a linguistically and culturally appropriate manner for two different groups- Farsi/Dari speakers vs. Urdu/Hindi speakers. The support group for domestic violence model is based on sharing information about basic resources in the community and how to access them. The project teaches coping and survival skills in a culturally sensitive manner and help victims relate to each other and practice skills imparted during one-on-one counselling.

The project assists in providing supportive counselling to Victims of Domestic Violence on a weekly basis. The Family Abuse Counsellor (presently designated as Manager, Family, Health and Volunteer Program) organizes support groups to provide information to victims of domestic violence, particularly those from the South and Central Asian region. The project will also enhance the clients' psychological empowerment process. The support group is organized to address the issue of isolation faced by the victims of domestic violence and strengthen a client centered group counseling model to educate them about the existing resources and how they can avail the resources to their best advantage. The project reaches out to the former victims of violence and survivors to get an opportunity to understand and practice survival skills, knowledge and access the community resources.
